About Northside Regional Medical Center, Youngstown
For 89 years, the hospital on Gypsy Lane served Youngstown's north side. During that time, it had five names and as many owners. This is the story of Northside Regional Medical Center, from Northside Hospital in 1929 to its closure under Steward Health Care.
Northside Hospital
The Youngstown Hospital Association opened Northside Hospital on Gypsy Lane in 1929. The site also sits on the border of Youngstown and Liberty Township. Then, starting in 1979, the hospital trained new family doctors. Later, in 1985, Western Reserve Health Care took over the campus and added to the building.
Forum Health
In 1997, Northside merged with Tod Children's Hospital and Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. Together, they formed Forum Health, and the hospital became Forum Health Northside Medical Center. However, Forum Health struggled with money. As a result, it filed for bankruptcy in 2009.
ValleyCare and Community Health Systems
Next, Community Health Systems, based in Franklin, Tennessee, bought Forum Health's hospitals out of bankruptcy. It then renamed the system ValleyCare Health System of Ohio, and the hospital took the name Northside Medical Center. In 2013, the hospital finished a $20 million project. As part of that work, it added 30,000 square feet and refurbished 28,000 more, including new emergency rooms.
Northside Regional Medical Center under Steward
Then, in May 2017, Steward Health Care bought Northside, Trumbull Regional, Hillside Rehabilitation and Sharon Regional from Community Health Systems. Steward also renamed the hospital Northside Regional Medical Center. Just fifteen months later, however, Steward announced the closure. It said patient numbers had fallen 71% in a decade. Finally, the hospital closed at 12:01 a.m. on September 20, 2018. See the closure timeline.
The building at 500 Gypsy Lane
After the hospital closed, Steward kept several services in the building. These included a family practice clinic, an outpatient lab, radiology, mammography and sleep studies. Meanwhile, the neighborhood grew quieter. By 2020, local reporters had noticed the change too. Also, a longtime Northside nurse noted that the city of Youngstown itself had no place left to deliver babies.
Finally, the last services in the building ended in September 2024, during Steward's bankruptcy. Since then, we have not been able to confirm who owns the building or whether anyone plans a new use. If that changes, we will update this page.
A region losing hospitals
Northside was the first of three Steward-era hospitals in the area to close. Later, Trumbull Regional Medical Center in Warren and Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital in Howland also shut, in March 2025. Steward had sold both to Insight, and Insight then surrendered their licenses in January 2026. Similarly, Sharon Regional Medical Center in Pennsylvania closed in January 2025. However, it reopened later that year under a new owner. For care today, see hospitals and ERs near Youngstown.
