St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital quick facts: 1044 Belmont Avenue, 24-hour emergency department, Level I Trauma Center, Primary Stroke Center

The St. Elizabeth Youngstown emergency department

The hospital's emergency department is open 24 hours a day, every day. Also, Mercy Health calls it a Level I Trauma Center and a Primary Stroke Center. That means its staff can treat the most serious injuries and act fast on strokes. Still, in a life-threatening emergency, call 911 instead of driving yourself. That way, paramedics can start treatment on the way and alert the hospital.

Since Northside closed

In September 2018, Steward closed Northside's emergency room and maternity unit. As a result, St. Elizabeth's, less than two miles away, became the main emergency department for north-side residents. At the time, Mercy Health's regional chief said the extra patients could strain its ER. However, he also pointed to a patient transfer center the system had set up the year before.

A teaching hospital

The hospital also hosts Mercy Health's internal medicine residency. The program works with Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Because of this, residents may care for you. Residents are doctors in training, and attending physicians supervise their work.
