Northside's residency programs and where they went
For decades, Northside trained new doctors through Western Reserve Health Education. When the hospital closed in 2018, its programs moved to Trumbull Regional Medical Center in Warren, which itself closed in 2025.
About this page. This address once held the hospital's page introducing its internal medicine residency faculty. That page is gone. This is an independent history of Northside's teaching programs, written from public sources. It does not list individual physicians.
Western Reserve Health Education
Northside's graduate medical education was run by Western Reserve Health Education (WRHE), a nonprofit that traces its residency training back to the Youngstown Hospital Association in the late 1800s. Besides residencies and fellowships, WRHE ran continuing medical education, medical student rotations and a health science library. In the Steward years it was affiliated with Trumbull Regional, Hillside Rehabilitation and Sharon Regional, and Trumbull Regional was a teaching hospital for Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED).
Family medicine
The best-documented program is family medicine. The Family Medicine Center at Northside opened in 1979, and by 2019 the residency had graduated 115 family physicians, more than two dozen of whom were practicing locally. The clinic kept running in the Northside building after the hospital closed.
Plans to move the residency to Trumbull Regional were already under way before Northside closed. In 2019, Trumbull Regional opened a new Family Medicine Center for the program, and residents rotated between the Warren site and the Northside clinic.
Internal medicine
Northside's website had a page for its internal medicine residency faculty, the page that used to live at this address. In later years WRHE listed an accredited internal medicine residency alongside family medicine, based at Trumbull Regional. We have not found a reliable public record of the internal medicine program's history at Northside itself, so we don't describe it further here.
Podiatry rotations
Kent State University's College of Podiatric Medicine listed Western Reserve Health Education among its clinical rotation sites for podiatry students. We have not confirmed the dates or details of podiatry training at Northside.
2025: the programs pause
When Trumbull Regional Medical Center closed in March 2025 under its new owner, Insight, WRHE had to place its residents elsewhere. Its president said 68 residents moved to hospitals in other states to finish their training, and 28 graduated on schedule. WRHE described the move as a pause rather than a shutdown, with talks under way about a new hospital affiliation and a goal of enrolling residents again by July 2026.
Where to train in the Valley now
Mercy Health runs an internal medicine residency at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, affiliated with NEOMED and osteopathic medical schools. We have not confirmed whether WRHE has resumed training; check with the programs directly for current information.
Trained at Northside?
Verification of residency training is normally handled by the sponsoring institution, not the hospital. For training through Western Reserve Health Education, start with WRHE. This site cannot verify training records.
